چکیده

Fossil coral is an excellent archive to extend the radiocarbon (C) calibration beyond tree-ring records; however, published coral data older than 26,000 years before present are too disparate for practical calibration. We propose an explanation for these discrepancies: trace amounts of secondary calcite and organic matter in fossil corals shift the C ages toward younger ages. In a series of acid-leaching experiments to simulate the standard cleaning procedure prior to C analysis, we measure up to a 300% enrichment of diagenetic calcite in corals due to the solubility differences between calcite and aragonite. In model calculations, we show the C age offsets produced by acid leaching could be hundreds to thousands of years when typical amounts of calcite are present in samples. We demonstrate the necessity and our ability to detect o0.2% calcite in aragonite by X-ray diffraction and apply ‘‘o0.2% calcite’’ as our a priori criterion for our coral samples. The estimated age offsets of samples with o0.2% calcite fall within the reported analytical uncertainty of C dating. In addition, we present C results from an extended hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) pretreatment for coral samples to remove organic matter. Our data show that treated samples yield consistent or older C dates compared to non-treated samples. These rigorous but necessary screening and cleaning techniques provide precise, reproducible and accurate radiocarbon calibration data. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Radiocarbon Reservoir Age of High Latitude North Atlantic Surface Water During the Last Glacial

The radiocarbon reservoir age of high latitude North Atlantic Ocean surface water is essential for linking the continental and marine climate records, and is expected to vary according to changes in North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) production. Measurements from this region also provide important input and/or tests of oceanic radiocarbon using 3-D global ocean circulation models. Here, we presen...

Chlorine-36 in fossil rat urine: an archive of cosmogenic nuclide deposition during the past 40,000 years.

Knowledge of the production history of cosmogenic nuclides, which is needed for geological and archaeological dating, has been uncertain. Measurements of chlorine-36/chlorine (36Cl/Cl) ratios in fossil packrat middens from Nevada that are radiocarbon-dated between about 38 thousand years ago (ka) and the present showed that 36Cl/Cl ratios were higher by a factor of about 2 before approximately ...

Absolute calibration of the Greenland time scale: implications for Antarctic time scales and for DC

We propose a new age scale for the two ice cores (GRIP and GISP2) that were drilled at Greenland summit, based on accelerator mass spectrometry C dating of foraminifera in core MD95-2042 (Paleoceanography 15 (2000) 565), calibrated by means of recently obtained paired C and Th measurements on pristine corals (Marine radiocarbon calibration curve spanning 10,500 to 50,000 years BP (thousand year...

Coral records of central tropical Pacific radiocarbon variability during the last millennium

[1] The relationship between decadal to centennial changes in ocean circulation and climate is difficult to discern using the sparse and discontinuous instrumental record of climate and, as such, represents a large uncertainty in coupled ocean‐atmosphere general circulation models. We present new modern and fossil coral radiocarbon (DC) records from Palmyra (6°N, 162°W) and Christmas (2°N, 157°...

The Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition: dating, stratigraphy, and isochronous markers.

Accurate and precise dating is vital to our understanding of the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition. There are, however, a number of uncertainties in the chronologies currently available for this period. We attempt to examine these uncertainties by utilizing a number of recent developments in the field. These include: the precise dating of the Campanian Ignimbrite (CI) tephra by 40Ar/39Ar; ...
